Summers almost here, and the future looks bright. So freshen up your beauty regime for the most colourful season in the fashion calendar. In this weeks 12-page special section, Carola Long meets Bobbi Brown, make-up guru to Hollywoods best-dressed stars, and hears her essential summer tips; Beth Dadswell takes a walk on the wild side, and discovers a brave new world of extreme make-up; while Gemma Hayward selects the new seasons must-have products for her and for him THE SCENE backstage at the Sass Bide show at New York Fashion Week is one of glamorous chaos. There are models scrambling into clothes, production staff testing sound and lighting to dramatic, somewhat cacophonous, effect and even an MTV crew filming an episode of a teen drama. Amid this frenzied activity, a petite woman in jeans with hair the colour of black coffee, who looks like a quietly glamorous “mom”, is providing the calm centre of the fashion storm. Bobbi Brown, renowned make-up artist to everyone from Sienna Miller to Susan Sarandon and founder of a successful, eponymous cosmetics brand, radiates a most un-fashiony serenity as she demonstrates the maquillage she has devised for the show on a model. She dabs at her face almost like a Renaissance painter, palette in hand, before her “elite team” of make-up artists from around the world set to work on recreating the effect.
We are at the Bargello in Florence, and she says, What are you thinking? and I say, Beauty, thinking of how very far we are now from the machine shop and the dry fields of Kansas, the treeless horizons of slate skies and the muted passions of roughnecks and scrabble farmers drunk and romantic enough to weep more or less silently at the darkened end of the bar out of, what else, loneliness, meaning the ache of thwarted desire, of, in a word, beauty, or rather its absence, and it occurs to me again that no male member of my family has ever used this word in my hearing or anyone elses except in reference, perhaps, to a new pickup or dead deer. By God, Henry, thats a beauty. This insight, this backward vision, first came to me as a young man, a boy really, as some weirdness of the airwaves slipped through the static of our new Motorola with a discussion of beauty between Robert Penn Warren and Paul Weiss at Yale College. We were in Kansas eating barbecue-flavored potato chips and waiting for Father Knows Best to float up through the snow of rural TV in 1963. I felt transported, stunned. Here were two grown men discussing beauty seriously and with dignity as if they and the topic were as normal as normal topics of discussion between men, such as soybean prices or why the commodities market was a suckers game or Oklahoma football or Gimpy Neiderland almost dying from his hemorrhoid operation. They were discussing beauty and tossing around allusions to Plato and Aristotle and someone named Pater, and they might be homosexuals. That would be a natural conclusion, of course, since here were two grown men talking about beauty instead of scratching their crotches and cursing the goddamned government trying to run everybodys business. Not a beautiful thing, that. The government. Not beautiful, though a man would not use that word. One time my Uncle Ross from California called my moms Sunday dinner centerpiece lovely, and my father left the room, clearly troubled by the word lovely, coupled probably with the very idea of California and the fact that my Uncle Ross liked to tap-dance. The light from the venetian blinds, the autumn, silver Kansas light laving the table that Sunday, is what I recall now because it was beautiful, though I of course would not have said so then, beautiful, as so many moments forgotten but later remembered come back to us in slants and pools and uprisings of light, beautiful in itself, but more beautiful mingled with memory, the light leaning across my mothers carefully set table, across the empty chair beside my Uncle Ross, the light filtering down from the green plastic slats in the roof of the machine shop where I worked with my father so many afternoons, standing or crouched in pools of light and sweat with men who knew the true meaning of labor and money and other hard, true things and did not, did not ever, use the word beauty.Late November, shadows gather in the shops north end, and Im watching Bobby Sudduth do piecework on the Hobbs. He fouls another cut, Motherfucker, fucking bitch machine, and starts over, sloppy, slow, about two joints away from being fired, but he just doesnt give a shit. He sets the bit again, white wrists flashing in the lamplight and showing botched, blurred tattoos, both from a night in Tijuana, and continues his sexual autobiography, Thats right, fucked my own sister, and Ill tell you, bud, it wasnt bad. Later, in the Philippines, the clap: As far as Im concerned, any man who hasnt had V.D. just isnt a man. I walk away, knowing I have just heard the dumbest remark ever uttered by man or animal. The air around me hums in a dark, metallic bass, light spilling like grails of milk as someone opens the mammoth shop door. A shrill, sullen truculence blows in like dust devils, the hot wind nagging my blousy overalls, and in the side yard the winch truck backfires and stalls. The sky yellows. Barn sparrows cry in the rafters. That afternoon in Dallas, Kennedy is shot.

When it comes to the business of making bicycles and accessories, San Diego is definitely a big player. The region is home to a host of bicycle and accessory manufacturers, some of which are gaining international renown. Vista-based Electra Bicycles makes bikes not for the recreational rider who does 10 to 15 miles at a time, but for someone who wants to ride down to the market for a quart of milk. The idea behind Electra was to make a bike thats not intimidating, and makes riding fun.

MARKETINGThe importance of marketing in the modern business climate cannot be overstated. In fact, management guru Peter F. Drucker has claimed that marketing is so basic it cannot be considered a separate function. It is the whole business seen from the point of view of its final result, that is, from the customers point of view. Marketing is the source of many important new ideas in management thought and practicesuch as flexible manufacturing systems, flat organizational structures, and an increased emphasis on serviceall of which are designed to make businesses more responsive to customer needs and preferences. This suggests that small business owners must master the basics of marketing in order to succeed. In the Macmillan Small Business Handbook, Mark Stevens discussed four main areas of marketing in which entrepreneurs should concentrate their efforts:1) determining the needs of customers through market research; 2) analyzing their own competitive advantages and developing an appropriate market strategy; 3) selecting specific target markets to serve; and 4) determining the best marketing mix to satisfy customer needs. The first three tasks are most appropriately performed when a start-up business is preparing to enter a market, or when an existing business is considering entering a new market or promoting a new product. The marketing mix, on the other hand, includes the main decision areas that an entrepreneur must consider on an ongoing basis. Some elements of the market environment, such as the general economic conditions, are beyond a small business owners control. But he or she can adjust elements of the companys marketing mixwhich consists of the four Ps: product, place, price, and promotionto better fit the market environment.
Earlier this fall, as I was checking out some of my regular Web sites, I came across some ideas worth consideration. Across the nation libraries are in trouble: not enough money; facing a personnel shortage; low pay for library staff because their value is not clearly understood, etc. * Make sure everyone is greeted with a smile and cheerful presence, be it in person or on the phone. * Consider adapting the Wal-Mart concept of a greeter.

Few health interventions are as cost-effective as programs that promote appropriate feeding and correct micronutrient deficiencies, with iodine supplementation or fortification being the most widespread and successful. Nutritional interventions not only preserve or improve cognitive function but also contribute to improved adult stature and worker productivity. In addition, reducing malnutrition frees scarce health resources to be allocated to other health crises. While progress has been made in correcting vitamin A deficiency and promoting breastfeeding, important challenges remain in combating iron and zinc deficiencies. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Nutrition is the science that studies the interactions between living organisms and food. Human nutrition includes the study of nutrients and other substances found in foods; how the human body uses nutrients for growth and maintenance; and the relationship between foods, food components, dietary patterns, and health. The study of nutrition encompasses all aspects of the ingestion, digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism, interaction, storage, and excretion of nutrients by the body. In a broader sense, the study of nutrition also includes the various psychological, sociological, cultural, technological, and economic factors that affect the foods and dietary patterns chosen by an individual.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Dear WILL HARRIS, The Deer
Kansas deer hunting is cherished by many. The tradition started in 1965 with Kansas first modern day deer hunting season. Over the last four decades changes have been made virtually every year in an attempt to increase deer hunting opportunities or accommodate special interest groups and others. “It really started when the 2005 House Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Committee of the Kansas Legislature asked the agency to look at our deer-related statutes and bring recommendations back the following session on ways to condense and simplify those statutes,” said KDWPs Mike Miller. Miller was assigned the monumental task of chairing a 10-member task force of KDWP personnel to address the legislatures request. Most members had more than 20 years service with the KDWP, were deer hunters and had a firm grasp on the deer hunting mood of their constituents. The group would meet regularly initially and quickly realized the system had become increasingly complex.

The literature on sound recording is as old as the technology itself. Yet despite the enormous variety of writings on the subject since the late nineteenth century, one assumption underlies most of the literature–that recording simply records. Only recently have scholars begun to question that assumption, exploring the possibility that recording has in fact had a profound influence on the musical world it documents. Timothy Day, a curator at the National Sound Archive in London, offers the latest contribution to this new scholarship. As he states from the outset of A Century of Recorded Music, recording has changed the way we listen to music and the way music is performed (p. ix). The scope of the book is somewhat narrower than the title suggests, as Day focuses on the creation and reception of recorded classical music in Britain and, to a lesser extent, the United States. This is a not a weakness of the book (just of the title), for the authors circumscription allows him to illustrate particular histori cal points in considerable detail in order to suggest the rich possibilities that the study of recordings offers (p. x). Day proceeds to do exactly this in the books four chapters. For the bulk of chapter 1, Making Recordings, Day considers the recording process from the view of the performer, explaining the changing demands of the technology and documenting performers experiences with, anti attitudes toward, recording. Among many crucial points Day drives home is that for decades, the process of making recordings was shaped by technical shortcomings (p. 24), whether due to the insensitivity of acoustic recording horns, the distortions wrought by early microphones, or the tape hiss of magnetic recording. Performers (as well as engineers and producers) had to compensate for these limitations, shaping the way music was performed in the studio and, consequently, heard by listeners. While otherwise compelling here, Day repeats a common and unsubstantiated claim–that in the 78-rpm era performers had to modify speeds [i.e., play faster] because of the time limitation of the. disc (p. 33). But rather than rushing through a piece, recording musicians were more inclined to accommodat e the time limitation by cutting music. Indeed, when listening to 78s, one can hear many leisurely performances of drastically Cut pieces. Later in the chapter (pp. 34- 46), Day shifts his focus from performers to producers, profiling such influential figures as Fred Gaisberg, Walter Legge, and John Culshaw. Here, Day rightly emphasizes how those on the other side of the microphones have shaped the way we hear music to an extent that few appreciate. The second chapter, The Repertory Recorded, chronicles the enormous expansion in the amount of classical music recorded over the course of the twentieth century. Day focuses on the impact of important record releases–from the National Gramophonic Society, in HMVs History of Music in Sound series, on Deutsche Grammophons Archiv Produktion label, and many, many others. Days thoroughness, however, becomes a liability with page after page of lists: of the contents of various anthologies, of the classical works broadcast by the BBC, of the discs reviewed in selected issues of Gramophone, and so on. While the authors encyclopedic knowledge is impressive, the sheer amount of raw data may well discourage readers. Perhaps Day intended these lists to be consulted rather than read straight through; nevertheless, there is often a lack of accompanying synthesis and perspective. For example, at several points in the chapter (pp. 58, 76, 128), Day makes or cites the claim that recording led to a mass audience for cla ssical music in Britain. The implication is that the expanded audience was a function of the increased production of classical recordings, such as those he surveys in the chapter. But did the proportion of classical music lovers in Britain actually change? Perhaps existing classical music devotees simply listened to more recordings once they became available, or perhaps the increase in Britains population matched or exceeded the growth of the classical record industry. Day restates his claim in the last chapter, citing as evidence the hundreds of thousands of issues of Gramophone and similar magazines sold in Britain in 1994 (p. 200). While this may be a large number, does it really reveal a mass audience in a nation of more than fifty million? An explicit discussion of terms–he does not define mass audience–and a more rigorous analysis of possible cause-and-effect relationships here would have been welcome.
A few years ago a friend played for me a tape copy of an Edison cylinder recorded by Johannes Brahms in Vienna in 1889. Edisons agent in the city, Theo Wangemann, announces the date and place of the recording and that he is with Doktor Brahms himself. After a short pause, the playing begins. I could not at all identify the piece, since the scratch and swish seemed to drown out everything. My friend then conducted what was playing, and it jumped out at me–a snippet from the composers Hungarian Dance No. 1 in G minor. What was also evident was a rambunctious, freewheeling pianism–what the young Artur Schnabel noted as Brahmss creative vitality and wonderful carelessness. More scientifically, Jonathan Berger, of the Center for Computer Assisted Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, after subjecting the Brahms cylinder to every conceivable scrutiny, notes a liberal rubato, some protracted fermati, and improvisation at a number of points and a tempo considerably slower than any recent recording. My sense is that Brahms was the kind of player who could play a piece all over again using only the notes he missed the first time around. Timothy Day is curator of Western Art Music at the Sound Archive of the British Library in London. He has given us, at the very least, a study of the history and implications of recorded music from the late nineteenth century to our day, beginning with an inaccurate description of that Brahms cylinder right on the first page of his study. Much of this chronological treatment of the history of recordings–from cylinders to 78 rpm discs (first acoustically, then electrically recorded) to the 33 rpm LP vinyl record (mono, later stereo) and on to the compact disc revolution (not to mention DVD)–has been well covered in such works as Roland Gelatts Fabulous Phonograph (1955, rev. 1977) and Guy A. Marcos Encyclopedia of Recorded Sound in America (1993). Moreover, the point of view given in Days historical overview is decidedly English, not to say provincial. He leaves out many historical developments in the Forties and the Fifties on this side of the Atlantic that deserve scrutiny. For instance: how did the long-playing record develop within the CBS labs? Any reader of the various editions of David Halls indispensable Records (not consulted by Day) would know that, after Columbias announcement of the LP revolution in the summer of 1948, RCA Victor, in a burst of foolish commercial effrontery, decided that they would put out their own kind of discs, playing at 45 rpm and measuring only 7, which meant that only five minutes or so of music could be contained on each side. The long-playing record, measuring 10 and later 12, and able to contain twenty-five minutes of music, triumphed. Soon realizing that they had been vanquished in this matter, RCA Victor had to eat crow in January 1950 and ask for a license from Columbia Records, the patentee, to put out LPs, which it then proceeded to do along with everyone else, and the 45 rpm record was relegated to the jukebox where it belonged. But for a while, it was a toss-up between two goliaths, William Paley of CBS and General David Sarnoff of RCA. There is a real story here, but Day is not interested. Similarly, while he is careful to point out the technological advances in recording on tape brought about by Decca/London, EMI, Deutsche Gramophon, and Telefunken, both in England and on the continent, he never mentions the revolutionary recording technique of C. Robert Fine and David Hall of Mercury Records in the United States-the simple device of hanging one Telefunken microphone over the podium, resulting in a series of still stunning and still revered recordings. The idea was that it was a conductors business to balance an orchestra, not an engineer with knob in hand after the fact.
Sales of recorded music fell overall in the Latin America region during 2005. But the region had a better year than the world generally. Sales in the region declined 0.4 percent in 2005 compared with a decline of 3.0 percent worldwide. Total sales of recorded music in Latin America were us$663.3-million in 2005. Brazil was the biggest market posting 2005 sales of us$265.4-million. This represents a decline of 12 percent compared with 2004 sales. Worldwide 2005 sales were us$33-billion. Mexico is the regions second biggest market for recorded music. Sales there increased 10 percent during 2005 to us$262.2-million-obviously very close to Brazils sales total.

Hard as it is to believe, the beautiful and delicate wings of the monarch carry this butterfly from as far north as Canada as it heads toward Mexico every fall, travelling thousands of miles. While the scientific community puzzles over how a creature that weighs only half a gram can make such a treacherous journey, the backyard conservationist can simply enjoy these colorful visitors every fall and spring. Monarchs in the 39 states east of the Rockies swarm toward isolated mountain ranges in Mexico. Roosting in large clumps, monarchs cover the trees in a blanket of orange and black — a sight that may be familiar to those who live along the coast of California. Monarchs west of the Rockies forgo the trip to Mexico, content with the warm Pacific coast. One thing naturalists struggle to understand is how the monarchs return to the same trees every year. Most monarchs die when they reach the central United States; it is actually their offspring that complete the journey.

Now that Baby Bullet express service is off and running in the San Francisco Bay Area, Caltrains engineering and construction team is turning its attention to other improvements, such as upgrading station amenities and making stations safer and more accessible. Caltrain recently kicked off the next phase of construction on the first maintenance facility in Caltrains 142-year history. During the coming year, crews will complete the construction of the $140-million facilitys tunnel and will begin work on the repair shop, which will increase the speed of repair work, storage tracks with ground power and a new indoor train washer, which will replace the portable machine now in use. Currently routine maintenance is done at a small, outdated train yard in San Jose and at the San Francisco station. Construction crews are in the midst of digging a pedestrian tunnel, which will allow workers to move between the shop and a new operations building. The construction of the maintenance shop should begin this Summer. The final phase of CEMOF is the construction of a new three-story operations building and one-story control facility, which will accommodate train dispatchers and other key staff.
A U.S. Senate vote on the Defense Department authorization bill, including more than $56 million for military construction and maintenance in Oklahoma, has been set aside for Congress to focus on budget and tax matters. Under the bill, Fort Sill would receive the biggest chunk of the state appropriations, with $25 million for barracks rehabilitation. The bill includes $9.6 million for work on the B-2 software maintenance facility at Tinker Air Force Base and $11 million for land acquisition at Altus Air Force Base. Vance Air Force Base would receive $6.7 million for a base engineering complex. Will Rogers World Airport would gain funding for three construction projects for the Oklahoma Air National Guard unit, including $3.1 million for an aeromedical training facility, $497,000 for barracks and $350,000 for a base supply complex.
The Missouri Supreme Court upheld the rights of municipalities to collect subdivision and maintenance bonds from developers in a case that pitted the city of Wildwood against the Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis. The General Assembly amended Section 89.410 in 1999 by enacting Senate Bill 20. As amended, Section 89.410.2 allows the city council to accept a bond “in an amount and with surety and other reasonable conditions, providing for and securing the actual construction and installation of the improvements.” The pre-amendment statute referenced “conditions satisfactory to it” rather than “other reasonable conditions.” In addition Section 89.410.3 requires cities to release any escrow amount within 30 days of completion of each category of improvement or utility, although cities may retain 5 percent to release when all improvements and utility work has been completed. According to Vogel, the Home Builders Association of Greater St. Louis proposed the 1999 amendments, but when municipalities changed their ordinances to conform with the amended statute, the HBA sued. In the case at hand, the HBA brought a declaratory judgment action against Wildwood challenging the validity of the city ordinance that requires the posting of bonds for subdivision improvements.

Why travel by tractor when you can drive a Ferrari? Richard Moore discovers why people are giving up mountain biking in favour of its road-based relation For more than 15 years, ever since the American Gary Fisher introduced the radical new concept of the mountain bike to the world, the humble road machine has lived very much in the shadow of its knobbly-tyred cousin. But in the last couple of years, that trend has been bucked with road bikes, particularly those at the higher end of the market, making a spectacular comeback. Perhaps it is because people have realised that their mountain bikes, bought in good faith and with such admirable intentions, havent actually seen too many mountains. Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Or maybe not. Road cycling has always had a dedicated following, with many attracted by the glamour of racing. But now there are an increasing number of non-competitive road rides, aimed at the many thousands who like a physical challenge without the competitive edge, and enjoy the camaraderie and the experience of riding in a group.
The Road. By Cormac McCarthy. Knopf, 256 pp., $24.00. The Road tracks the journey of an unnamed father and son as they wander across a postapocalyptic wasteland. Though we never learn exactly what calamity has transpired, the landscape is utterly ruined and covered in ash. Wildlife is absent, and the surviving human population is so sparse and desolate that every remote stranger is both competitor and threat. Pushing a shopping cart of salvaged possessions with a direction in mind (south) but no real destination (there is no safe place to go), father and son make the dangerous passage speaking essentially only to each other. On the way they discover a bomb shelter with a cache of canned food, a man burned by a lightning strike, prisoners huddled against the approach of their cannibal captors, an ash-shrouded locomotive, a nearly blind old man who tries to steal their supplies, numerous corpses (including, most gruesomely, a charred infant on a campfire spit), and a small boy they cannot help, whose memory haunts the son to the end of the novel. The horror, in other words, is unrelieved, and we feel that McCarthy, our great chronicler of violence, is filling out his oeuvre with a projection of ultimate destruction. In the wake of apocalypse, reconstituting human life is a grim, uncertain business. McCarthys fragmented style throughout suggests that human speech and human narrative must also–like other primitive skills–be reconstituted. And so the code of simple survival for his characters has as its analogue the pared-down, halting, mythical rhythms of the prose. In those places where the language is both beautiful and terrifying, the parallel is just right: Perhaps in the worlds destruction it would be possible at last to see how it was made. Oceans, mountains. The ponderous counterspectacle of things ceasing to be. The sweeping waste, hydroptic and coldly secular. The silence.

As the preferred provider of web solutions for Mazda dealers, Dealerskins will create custom, expertly designed websites for each dealer, and will provide training and support. Mazda dealers also will receive Dealerskins proprietary sales tools including its Ups! search engine optimization and keyword report, Redline Configurator, Autobahn Inventory, and CarFax vehicle history check. Dealers may choose from three packages, each offering a variety of tools that maximize site traffic and leads, and convert those leads into more sales and service opportunities. We are excited about this partnership with Dealerskins, as it will give many of our dealers an interactive edge in the digital space. Privitelli, group manager, Relationship Marketing of Mazda North American Operations. In many cases, a consumer decision on whether they visit a dealership is made from their experience online. Our dealers invest a significant amount of money, time, and care into their facilities to deliver the Mazda brand promise of Zoom-Zoom. In this new shopping reality, that same care and attention must go into the design of their website–their virtual showroom.

Editors note: This article is adapted from Menke and Bobbins Integrative Chiropractic, scheduled for release in 2007 by Elsevier Health Sciences. “The medicalization of early diagnosis not only hampers and discourages preventative health care, but it also trains the patient-to-be to function in the meantime as an acolyte to his doctor. He learns to depend on the physician in sickness and in health. He turns into a lifelong patient.” “Medicalizing” is forcing conditions into familiar diagnostic categories for medical management.1 Every complaint has an antidote, whether it needs one or not. ; Treating natural consequences of living as diseases that must be vanquished, leads to too much treatment and too much dependence on the authoritative “professional.” We tend to grant most, if not all of our decision-making authority to an expert in highly complex technologies. In the case of medicine, this often complicates the commonplace condition and prolongs selflimiting ones. Today, diseases and drugs are way oversold.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
Before reading this chapter, please see “How to Get the Most Out of this Book” on page 1. It will clarify questions you may have concerning data collection procedures, forecasting methodology, sources and references, and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. GAS PRICES ASIDE. According to a recent poll of the Travel Industry Association of America and AAA, 54 percent of Americans planning car trips this summer say rising gas prices wont thwart their plans. Nearly 122 million of us are expected to hit the road sometime in the next three months. Those concerned about gas prices (46 percent) were predominantly families with children and lower income travelers. Some said they might shorten their trips or alter their routes or spend more time in one place. Only 1 percent of those polled said gas prices has caused them to cancel their summer vacations.

How to Survive and Succeed as an Entrepreneur Both the story and Moores unique, upbeat and honest style of writing are an inspiration. Guts are what turned this former regional moving company into an outfit generating $85 million worth of sales a year, and those guts are plainly Tim Moores. But this book is far more than a simple how to for the moving industry. Moore speaks to all aspects of starting a company on ones own: to the inevitable hurdles that one has to overcome; to the benefits of partnerships (and, of course, the negatives); to the love of watching something grow and succeed; to the many wonderful friends and relationships that one makes along the journey; and to a whole array of other issues and concerns, including some sage advice on the real estate market. Laden with quotes and anecdotes from everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Canadian star athlete Diane Jones-Konihowski to Toronto entrepreneur Ed Mirvish, On the Move serves up a juicy compendium of inspirational delights. Its perfect, too, for the motivational speaker interested in rounding out his or her stock of aphorisms. And this speaks well to another of Moores strengths — recognizing the genius and strength in others. Never afraid to reward employees and associates for their unique talents, Moore was rewarded, in turn, with their loyalty. And by surrounding himself with talented individuals — each of whom had a desire to succeed — and motivating them to perform at the highest level of their abilities, Moore found his recipe for success in the moving business.

At this low ebb in Tory fortunes, the Westminster council scandal hands another hefty piece of ammunition to Labour. The auditors conclusions will be matched with those of Sir Richard Scotts Iraq report. Put crudely, its a message that says the Tories cannot be trusted with power. More subtly - since both Scott and Magill were called in to tidy up after that late Eighties period of Tory hegemony when arrogant politicians gave little thought to the niceties of proper procedure - the lesson is that the more politicians feel they walk on water, the more dangerous they get. The Westminster affair is also to do with amateurism and political paranoia. Lady Porter was always an exotic. She came late to politics and never really understood, let alone sympathised with, the local democratic system. Her fate confirms, perhaps unhappily, that modern British politics is a place for specialists alone. As a local authority, the City of Westminster has a specific character, from which one should not generalise too far. It is the only council to have a permanent Security Service liaison. (Westminsters permission is needed to allow MI5 to check manholes on the routes around Buckingham Palace.)Letting City Hall in Victoria fall into Labour hands seemed akin to giving away the Crown Jewels.

THIS MONTH IM NOT writing for you, but to you. I get many letters from aspiring and perspiring personal trainers with myriad questions ranging from how to raise the bar–pun intended–to how to raise their rates. They want to know how to start, how to stay and how to grow as a business. Ill try to hit some of the recurring themes this month. * Job vs. career. Theres no correct answer here; just dont be one and say youre the other. Many people elect to become trainers as a way to supplement their income but have no desire to break new ground in health or fitness. Others make it their lifes work and will stop at nothing to see it through. To flirt with the field and portray yourself as a lifer to raise your rates is not cool. * Commit to the hours. Look, garbage men work early in the morning and bartenders work late at night. Trainers usually work when others dont, like many service-industry people. This is something you should know before entering the profession. If thats not okay with you, youll be the trainer who gripes to all his clients about being tired and the hours he keeps. Would you want to train with that guy?
Personal Training Professionals (PTP) Opens New Location in CT NEW CANAAN, Conn. — Personal Training Professionals announces the opening of another personal training studio in Wilton, CT. This is the first new location since offering the concept as a franchise in 2007 and on the heels of 10 successful years in the original New Canaan location. I am thrilled about the new location, says Baer, and even more excited about the franchising of PTP. Passion for their work will only get fitness professionals so far and our proven business model will give personal trainers the power and protection they need to own their own business.
The basic premise of person of the therapist training is that therapy is a personal encounter within a professional frame. Although theory and technique are essential to the professional practice of therapy, the process is effected wholly through the relationship between therapist and client. This means that to fathom the therapy relationship, one must understand its components, both personal and professional. The professional aspects of the relationship define the roles of the participants vis-a-vis one another. The personal component of the therapy relationship viscerally relates the therapist to the clients life.Therapy challenges clinicians to use their personal selves effectively within the professional relationship. The personal component of this relationship is not about some generic liking and acceptance of clients. It is specific to the goals and means of therapy. Thus therapists need training that both opens them to themselves and teaches them vulnerability, discipline, and freedom within the relationship. One approach, the person/practice model (Aponte Winter, 1987) attempts to integrate intensely personal work on the self with clinical practice. It illustrates well some of the dilemmas over boundaries that confront trainers and trainees who pursue this personal focus in professional training.

Children at a local primary school have got into the festive spirit by designing Christmas cards. Year five students at Rowley Lane Junior and Infant School were asked by Abode Construction, of Lepton, to design a range of Christmas cards for their customers. Alex Moscovitch (front right) , of Abode Construction is pictured presenting present prizes to the children (from left) Aleena Sattar, who won first prize with her design (above), Charlotte Poor who was in second place and Joe Hodgson who was third.
CHRISTMAS shoppers will welcome the news that Barclaycard has teamed up this week with 17 retailers to offer discounts of 10 per cent or more to cardholders who use their Barclaycard for Christmas shopping. The retailers hope to persuade shoppers to spend money before Christmas rather than waiting for the sales. The offer should also help boost Barclaycard, whose share of the credit card market has been dropping steadily. This is not the first time credit cards have offered cashbacks and discounts instead of points and air-miles. Goldfish, the credit card run by British Gas and HFC Bank, offers users discounts on gas and electricity bills from British Gas Trading, or the chance to set savings against BT bills and the TV licence. It offers points for each pound spent, which can be swapped for vouchers at Asda, MS and Boots. Alliance Leicester broke new ground last March with their Moneyback credit card, offering a rebate of 0.5 per cent on spending up to pounds 3,000 a year, rising to 1 per cent on anything over that. In January, 400,000 cardholders will get average rebates of pounds 25. On top of that, eight retailers, including BP, MFI and Currys, give cardholders instant discounts equal to the rebates from the Alliance. The incentive seems to work: cardholders use their card 12 times a month, four times the industry average. The Birmingham Midshires discount card launched this year offers tiered cashbacks ranging from 0.33 per cent up to pounds 3,000 a year, to 0.75 per cent and then 1 per cent on spending over pounds 7,000. In May the Amex Blue card launched, offering 1 per cent cashback off the value of all purchases made with the card, which will rise to 5 per cent next month only. The annual pounds 12 fee takes a little icing off the cake. Barclaycards campaign ends on Christmas Eve. If it wins extra business for the retailers and Barclaycard it may lead to something more permanent. The other cashback cards may also decide to improve and extend their offers. If a recession really is on the way, there might just be a little silver lining for card-users. Barclaycard: 0151-473 (Trade Mark)6; Birmingham Midshires: 0800 0684466; Alliance Leicester: 0500 838383; American Express: 0800 700111.
Had you been in the Clapham area of London this time last year you might have seen a slight, bearded man in sandals and spectacles stuffing post boxes with stacks of small brown envelopes. He dispatched several hundred every Christmas and for some reason was of the belief that the Post Office might not deliver them if they were all posted in one place. There will be no Christmas cards from Euan Uglow this year, no home-made jam signed: “Much love, EU.” He died on 31 August, aged 68, after a short illness that surprised and shocked him but never suppressed his spirit. Euan was, in the words of the art critic Bill Packer, “one of the best painters to have worked in England in the past 50 years”. Myles Murphy, a fellow painter and friend who visited his studio in Turnchapel Mews soon after he died, came away “elated”. Not because his presence is still all around - in the hundreds of paintbrushes, the plumb lines, the 24-hour clock he built to work backwards just to prove that he could - but “because the paintings are so good”. Even those that remain unfinished: the Halloween gourd, the luminous nudes, the still lives he began (and sometimes finished) on Boxing Day in one of his many rituals.

The plumber is late. So George and I lean by the front door, shooting the breeze: he has boyfriend trouble (he hasnt got one). Finally, a white van pulls up; its nearly an hour past the appointment time, but the driver is in no apparent hurry. Out lumbers a plumber, or maybe a pig, bloated with carbohydrate, unshaven and hacking and coughing. “At last,” says George, who is keeping me company for the want of anything better to do. He gives me a peck on the cheek and leaves for the police station. George is a bent copper. I know that look. Every gay man does. Youre walking down the street and you forget yourself (or remember yourself) and take your Significant Other by the hand. You dont see the gang on the upcoming corner until its too late, and you cant drop your blokes hand because that would be giving in.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Part II, explanatory economics, represents the bulk of the book. The economics of demand, price elasticity, risk aversion, and the effect of insurance on the demand for medical services are explained clearly and well. Behavior of suppliers in the medical care market is reviewed, with attention given to differences in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. A solid explanation of competitive markets allows discussion of timely issues such as the limits of applicability of the competitive model to the medical care market, price and nonprice competition, and market power of providers, purchasers, and patients. Outside readings on current managed competition proposals would augment the textbook discussion well.A short section on the economic effects of information asymmetries in the medical care and health insurance market introduces the concepts of supplier induced demand and adverse selection. Both discussions are short, but the portion on adverse selection especially needs expansion. More rigor, explanatory graphs, and a more extensive bibliography would make the adverse selection concept more useful. This topic is critical to a sound understanding of the functioning of medical expense insurance. The final section deals with value judgments and evaluative economics. The nontechnical explanation of efficiency versus fairness criteria for evaluating medical care policy is somewhat cursory. More technical material is needed to improve the precision of this discussion. However, even without any additions, the text provides a general background on issues of access to medical care, affordability, and quality of care. The difficulty of making allocation decisions given scarce resources is clearly laid out and opens the way for a discussion of policy alternatives.
The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology 2002;187(3), Part 2, focuses on how and why womens health and gender-based competencies should be woven into the fabric of undergraduate medical education. It discusses appropriate components of the health and medical curriculum, and combining health care competencies with educational objectives and models for teaching reproductive health.

Jack Kerouacs 1957 novel was a mostly autobiographical travelogue of cross-country trips that Kerouac took during the late 1940s. On the Roads characters were thinly-disguised Beat luminaries including Allen Ginsberg William S. Burroughs and Kerouac himself who–as narrator Sal Paradise–reflected the American fascination with road travel. The roads attraction is expressed throughout Americas literature popular culture and twentieth-century life. On the Road fostered an alternative view of American life preceding the counterculture of the 1960s; this unintended effect on Kerouacs part was partially responsible for his reclusiveness during his later years. The book covers four road trips mainly between New York and San Francisco with several stops in Denver and detours into Chicago New Orleans Virginia and Mexico. The catalyst for the book was Neal Cassady a mutual friend of Kerouacs and Ginsbergs whose character was named Dean Moriarty. A fast-talking charismatic womanizer from Denver Cassady had a love of joyriding in stolen cars which put him through Denvers reform schools. In On the Road Sal idolizes Dean (as Kerouac idolized Cassady) as a swaggering cowboy-like man of action: “(Deans criminality) was a wild yea-saying overburst of American joy; it was Western the west wind an ode from the Plains.”Kerouacs book sparked controversy by featuring the underside of American life in the 1950s: frenetic travel hit-and-run romances bop jazz liquor marijuana all-night diners and hitchhiking. The book begins with Sal the novelist-to-be who lives with his aunt in New Jersey travelling to Denver to see Dean. This trip initiates a series of cross-country trips by car bus and hitchhiking. One memorable sequence finds Dean and Sal travelling east from Denver to Chicago in a Cadillac they are hired to drive. Making the trip in 17 hours the car makes it to Chicago in worse shape than when it left from Denver.

MINNEAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 22, 1999– Introduction by Pete Dunne, Renown Birding Expert and Author; Endorsed by Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Swarovski Optik, Pennington Seed and Birders World Magazine Bird watching is an extremely popular outdoor activity and one that tops even the hunting industry in annual expenditures by its enthusiasts, said Paul Rinde, senior vice president of Product Acquisition and Development for WizardWorks. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are more than 60 million people in the United States who are wildlife watchers, and observing and feeding birds makes up more than 85 percent of those wildlife watchers. Bird Watcher will give both veterans and new birders the opportunity to enjoy the sport in a new medium from the comfort of their home.
OAKLAND — Three little girls from Markham Elementary School fell behind the rest of their peers during an after-school trip to Martin Luther King Jr. Shoreline Park hosted by the Golden Gate Audubon Society. They were transfixed. Their eyes glued to the ends of three pairs of binoculars, they watched as a flock of birds circled the park lawn for a landing. “Wow! Thats so beautiful!” Naja Sims-Harris squealed as her binoculars followed the flock. “Its hecka beautiful,” her friend Davinyce Cola agreed, her mouth wide open as she watched.
There are, in the world, roughly 10,000 different species of birds. About 800 of those fly here in the United States, and, of the 800, more than half can be found in Utah. On any given day, an individual might mentally recognize five or six different birds, and a casual bird-watcher may make a couple dozen casual identifications. A serious birder might be able to point out 50 or 60 different birds on any given day. Bird-watching is to some interesting and to others a passion.

Homeowners looking to refurbish their houses but unwilling to use expensive credit cards to finance it will soon be served by a new, locally based loan company specializing in home improvement loans. American First Mortgage Source Inc. will open Feb. 1 at 504 W. Mission Ave., in Escondido. Jess Chinchillas, founder of the company, recently returned to the county after serving as vice president for The Money Store, a Sacramento-based home lender. The home improvement loan is secured by a lien on the subject property, he added. Since the average home improvement loan is smaller than other kinds of home equity loans, but has just as much paperwork, the points charged are usually proportionally higher, he added.

Prior to joining Hamilton Construction, Light was a project manager with Valley Construction Company for 23 years, primarily in the Warner Center complexes in Woodland Hills. Correa managed construction contracts at Point Mugu and Port Hueneme naval bases for Phillips National Company in Oxnard.
After the robust growth in 2006, construction activity posted even higher growth rates in 2007. The value of construction put in place surged by 18.5% over 2006. Activity in civil engineering increased by 24.7% as a result of the construction of transport infrastructure. The construction of buildings grew by 15.5%; within that, non-residential construction was up 20.2%, whereas activity in residential construction decreased by 0.9%. Based on detailed data on issued building permits, the vigorous construction of hotels appears to have continued last year, probably along with the construction of wholesale and retail trade buildings. In interpreting the figure on the value of residential construction put in place we should bear in mind that these figures exclude the activity of smaller firms (see the note under the table), where the construction of buildings is the main activity. Stronger growth was partly linked to favourable weather conditions, especially in the first half of the year. This is corroborated by the business trends regarding the limiting factors in construction. The share of firms that reported bad weather conditions as a limiting factor was much lower in the first half of 2007 than in the previous year. The weather was also more propitious than the year before in the third quarter, but it was less favourable in the fourth quarter, which affected growth in the latter part of the year. The growth in the number of employees increased further last year. In 2007 the number of people employed in the construction sector was 11.3% higher, on average, than in 2006. The number of workers by activity rose particularly in building completion; in the latter part of the year it also increased in general construction. In terms of employee status, higher growth rates were recorded in the number of sole proprietors and their employees.

SHOPPINGConvenience goods are goods that consumers purchase frequently, immediately, and with minimal effort. People do not spend a large amount of time shopping for convenience items. They are usually purchases made routinely, such as buying groceries on a weekly basis, or habitually, such as purchasing a daily newspaper. Convenience products include common staples, such as milk and bread. Some convenience goods, however, are not purchased routinely or habitually. They are bought on impulse, such as an ice cream cone on a summer day. Many impulse items are displayed in a manner that encourages quick choice and purchase, such as the candy, magazines, and batteries that are routinely placed near the cash register at checkout counters. Other convenience products may be purchased as emergency items, when the consumers feel there is an urgent need, such as buying candles, water, or canned goods when preparing for a storm. Convenience products can be found in stores such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and department stores.

ADVERTISINGThe various delivery mechanisms for advertising include banners at sporting events, billboards, Internet Web sites, logos on clothing, magazines, newspapers, radio spots, and television commercials. Advertising has so permeated everyday life that individuals can expect to be exposed to 1,500 to 3,000 different messages each day. While advertising may seem like the perfect way to get a message out, it does have several limitations, the most commonly noted ones being its inability to focus on an individual consumers specific needs, provide in-depth information about a product, and be cost-effective for small companies.Advertising can take a number of forms, including advocacy, comparative, cooperative, direct mail, informational, institutional, outdoor, persuasive, product, reminder, point-of-purchase, and specialty advertising.

Despite an industry upheaval and two gravely ill sons, this health-care entrepreneur discovered the prescription for perseverance. Sadly, looming business woes were the least of the Langdons worries that year. In the summer of 1996, at age three, their son Spencer–twin brother of Tyler–was diagnosed with leukemia, warranting three years of chemotherapy and approximately $1,000 worth of medication each month. Faced with circumstances that would obliterate the future goals of most, the Langdons didnt fold, but instead expanded ATPs services to override the Medicare massacre. Making ATP a onestop shop by adding outpatient rehab to its services was the ultimate goal, but first the Langdons had to move the company out of their Carrboro, North Carolina, home (situated in a bedroom, no less) and into a Hillsborough, North Carolina, office complex. To Ted, outpatient was ATPs salvation. I really started seeing the effects [of the Balanced Budget Act] in 1997, says Ted, 33. Medicare-based agencies were laying off staff, and the first people to go were with contract companies. If they didnt go Out of business or merge with other corporations, agencies drastically reduced their pay rates to contract companies, lowering the therapists wages. Some just didnt pay at all–like House Calls, a statewide home-health agency in North Carolina whose owner was nabbed for allegedly double-billing his way to Medicare/Medicaid fraud in 1997. I tried everything I could to retrieve [the $14,000 House Calls owed], but they were sued by everyone, says Ted. They had everything frozen, and I wa s so far down on the lawsuit list that, basically, I never got paid.

Orange County Personal Injury

December 20th, 2008

When you are involved in a car accident, there are a number of things you should know, but unfortunately, this information is not readily available. This article discusses what you need to know about personal injury claims long before you even think about hiring a lawyer. If you are injured in a car accident, and the accident was not your fault, you have the right to sue the owner and driver of the other vehicle for damages. These damages are paid to you by the other drivers insurance company. Tort law does not compensate the other driver for any injury he or she may have suffered as a result of causing the car accident. However, separate from tort law, all automobile insurance policies sold in Alberta provide for me payment of accident and disability benefits. Unlike tort law, both you and the driver of the other vehicle are entitled to receive the same accident and disability benefits.
In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

The ABC network sitcom Home Improvement first aired on September 17 1991 and ran for eight seasons through May 1999. During only its second season the show was renewed for three additional seasons an unusual decision in the television industry. Based on the stand-up comedy routine of its star Tim Allen (born Timothy Allen Dick in 1953) Home Improvement initially reflected Allens love of power tools cars and Sears department stores as well as mirroring his own family situation. Allen portrayed Tim Taylor the host of cable TVs “Tool Time.” His wife Jill was portrayed by Patricia Richardson. More than just comedy though Home Improvement epitomized the concerns of the largest generation in history the baby boomers. The Taylors were a representation of the average American family of the 1990s and their struggles although treated with light-hearted humor reflected the struggles of the shows demographic. In the main three fundamental concerns of the boomer generation were examined on a weekly basis–relationships family and the search for spirituality.
MORE homes are set for a facelift as part of regeneration plans. Gateshead Council has submitted an application for planning permission to carry out major works to homes in Watt Street, Telford Street, Hedley Street, Stephenson Street, Saltwell Road and Whitehall Road, in Bensham. Coun David Napier, right, cabinet spokesman for housing, says: This is a huge programme which will benefit thousands of local residents.

FINANCEDividend policy is the decision regarding funds to be distributed or returned to the equity investors. This can be done with common stock dividends, preferred stock dividends, or stock repurchase by the business of its own stock. The aim of this decision is to retain the resources in the business that are required to run the business or make additional investments in the business, as long as the returns earned exceed the required return. In theory, management should return or distribute all resources that cannot be invested in the business at levels in excess of the required return. In practice, however, dividends are often maintained at or changed to certain levels in order to convey the proper signals to the investors and the financial markets. For example, dividends can be maintained at moderate levels to demonstrate stability, maintained at or reduced to low levels to demonstrate the growth opportunities for the business, or increased to higher levels to demonstrate the restoration of a strong financial (capital) structure (debt and equity capital) for the business.Capital is the total of financial resources invested in the business. In terms of the sources, there are two types of capital: interest-bearing debt funds, such as loans, bonds, short-term notes, and interest-bearing payables to trade suppliers; and equity, such as common and preferred stock and the earnings retained in the business that add to stockholders share of the entities. In terms of uses, there are also two types of capital: net working capital, such as operating cash, inventory, and receivables, less interest-free payables to trade suppliers; and fixed capital, such as property, plant, and equipment. Capital is managed to maximize wealth by maximizing the rates of return on investments of capital and thus maximizing the total net present value of the business. This can be done by minimizing the amount of capital used for given business investments with given business returns.Weighted average cost of capital is the weighted average of the returns on investment or future dividends for the stockholders and interest rates on debt for the creditors. This average return should be used as the required return for investments, as mentioned earlier, because it represents the weighted average of the required returns of all the different debt creditors and equity investors. It also represents the weighted average of the costs that can be saved by the business if the resources or financial funds are returned to the creditors and investors instead of being used for investments within the business.

permanent hair removal

Q Im tired of shaving every single day. Has laser hair removal improved at all over the past couple of years, and is it right for me? * Lasers work best on dark hair and light skin. The low-energy light targets pigment in the hair follicle, damaging it enough to slow down future growth. The light is attracted to color like a magnet, Gilmore explains. Since blonde hair doesnt have much pigment, the laser wont gravitate toward it as well as it would dark-colored hair. And if your skin is naturally dark or tanned (even from self-tanners), the laser wont detect dark hair against it. * You wont get instant results. Hair cycles through one growth phase and two dormant phases, usually within two to four months total. So as more hair grows in, youll need additional treatments, about four weeks apart.
NEW YORK — The popularity of barer looks has turned laser hair removal into one of the fastest-growing nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in recent years, with more than 1.3 million performed in 2005. But consumers also have a growing variety of options for at-home hair removal. Two recent additions to the field include the new Nads Hair Removal Essentials Kit from LifeSource, and a new line of Veet depilatory creams and waxes from Reckitt Benckiser Inc. Veet is stressing personalization with its hair-removal gel creams, which come in three formulations for dry, normal or sensitive skin. Veet Ready to Use Wax Strips, meanwhile, come in resin-based formulations for normal-to-dry skin, and a sugar-based wax designed to reduce the potential for irritation on sensitive skin.
